Competition Entry
The project concerns the design of a new three-storey residence in the residential area of Vouliagmeni, intended to meet the needs of a family. Given the strategic location of the plot, offering unobstructed views of both the adjacent park and the wider area of Vouliagmeni, the main design concept focused on placing all primary living spaces, the outdoor areas, and the swimming pool in the northwestern part of the plot. In this way, all daily activities take place in direct contact with the natural environment. Conversely, the main entrance of the building and the entrance to the underground parking area are positioned on the opposite side, ensuring convenient access from the main road.
The residence is organized into wings consisting of three main levels, which are connected through a central spiral staircase. This staircase, together with the striking tree that dominates the outdoor swimming pool area, forms a key architectural feature of the building. Another defining element is the external expression of the structure, characterized by a slender structural band and triangular terminations that run along the façade, articulating each level and creating the perception of a continuous upward flow. These triangular elements are echoed in the form of the barbecue canopy, as well as in the diagonal geometries of the two outdoor shelters and the main entrances of the building.
The ground floor accommodates the shared living spaces, such as the kitchen, living room, and dining area, along with certain private-use areas, including a guest WC and a guest bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The first floor houses the children’s bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, as well as a shared family living area. The top floor can be considered a private, autonomous zone for the parents, as it includes a home office, the master bedroom with its bathroom, and two walk-in closets.
The basement functions as a space for relaxation and recreation, featuring a home cinema, an indoor swimming pool, and a playroom. It also includes staff guest rooms with en-suite bathrooms, which receive natural light and ventilation through a large cours anglaise. Auxiliary spaces such as storage rooms, mechanical rooms, laundry areas, and additional bathrooms complete the basement level.
The architectural form is simple and contemporary, characterized by a strong sense of transparency and a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces. Compositionally, the elongated shape of the residence, combined with the strategic placement of large openings on the northwestern side of the building, enhances the natural extension of the interior toward the outdoor areas, the swimming pool, and the garden.
